What we feed our Japanese Chins
This recipe will make approx. 1-2 cups of food so if you are planning a weeks worth of meals calculate accordingly.
10 oz of raw meat and meaty bones This includes chicken, chicken bones including necks, backs and leg quarters. We also feed and recommend mixing meats to include chicken, red meat, lamb, fish and occasionally pork and other specialty meats. Typically we buy meat on the bone and cut off the larger chunks of meat leaving some meat on the bones. You should have about 6-8 ounces of muscle meat ready for the recipe mix. We give the dogs the bones in the backyard to enjoy and then chop up the rest of the raw meat to mix with the following recipe. If you have a food grinder that can handle chicken bones you can also just grind it all up together. If you are not comfortable with feeding bones please be sure to add Cryofood to your recipe to ensure proper calcium for strong healthy bones. You can also cook the meat if you like but remember any meat cooked over 110 degrees loses enzymes and the nutritional benefit of the meat. Also you cannot feed cooked bones to a dog, they will not digest in their system and risk injury from splintered bones. Raw bones digest within 15 minutes and are no more dangerous than any chew toy. If you cook your meat please be sure to add Nzymes and Antioxidants to your recipe. Canned fish with bones such as salmon, mackerel and sardines can also be added. Raw fish should be avoided especially if fresh water as it may harbor parasites. Never feed raw salmon or trout from the Pacific Coast (California to Alaska) due to a disease called salmon poisoning which is fatal to dogs.
2 oz of hearts, livers and kidneys Yes, it’s a little gross but organ meat is an important part of proper nutrition and the raw diet. Liver and kidney in particular are nutrient-dense and provide a great deal of nutritional value. If you look in the meat department near the poultry you can usually find these easily or purchase whole chickens.
1-2 Organic Raw Eggs You can rotate the egg in an out of the recipe every other time you make the diet if you like. You can also cook the egg slightly which will make the egg white easier to digest. You can also hard boil the eggs then grind the entire egg with shell in a food processor and add to the food mix. The shell will add the calcium needed for a complete diet. You can feed as many eggs as you like as long as you are giving a wide variety of proteins.
2-4 oz of Fruits & Cooked Veggies (optional) Veggies, fruits and grains are optional as dogs do not require carbohydrates as part of their diet. However, they do provide some nutritional value, especially leafy green veggies. Veggies should be cooked (preferably steamed) or pureed in a food processor, juicer or blender. Whole, raw veggies are not harmful but their cells do not breakdown during digestion so they provide little nutritional value to dogs. Good veggies to include are broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, zucchini, carrots and squash. Fruits such as apples, bananas, papaya, mangoes, berries and melon can be added in small amounts. No grapes, raisins or avocado.
- 1 Tablespoon of Yogurt or Cottage Cheese - 1 tsp of Howlistic Dog Organic Virgin Coconut & Emu Oil Blend (or ½ tsp emu oil ½ tsp organic coconut oil) - ¼ tsp NR Seaweed Mineral Food - ½ tsp Organic Apple Cider Vinegar - ½ tsp Raw Organic Honey - 1 Clove Chopped Garlic - 12 Crushed Dr Bob's Daily Health Nuggets - ½ tsp Nzymes Bak-Plus - 1 Nzymes Daily Antioxidant Tablet
Additional Optional Ingredients: 2-8 oz of dry Oatmeal or cooked rice. This can be helpful if the diet is causing loose stool or you can also add a 1-2 tablespoons of raw oatmeal to the food just before mixing will also help.
1 tsp of egg shells Additional supplements for bone and joint health are also included on a routine basis
You can prepare as much of this recipe as you like in advance freeze and then defrost in the fridge as needed. I always try to base my recipe on what’s on sale at the store and look for fresh meats $2 a pound or less that way you can prepare this diet for the same or less than what you would spend on kibble. With the ever growing problem with recalls and processed commercial diets nothing can ensure the health of your dog like a fresh home diet as we can all benefit from. Processed foods lose so much of the nutritional value that if we expect or dogs to live long healthy lives we need to make the effort to do a little now and benefit from it dramatically in the long run.
All of the supplements & mixes recommended here can be purchased directly from us for your convenience at www.personalizedforpets.com. Please check in the Howlistic Dog section for these products.
24 Hours - One Day a Month Choose one day out of the month to fast your chin. Fasting helps detox the body from harmful chemicals and toxins. It may seem cruel but your Chin will be better off for it and re-energized the next day. Alternate months for either a food or water fast on Food Fast Months you can give a small mixture of brown rice and organic coconut milk, but avoid any meat products during the fast.
