YOUR CHINS DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES All puppies follow the same pattern of development, passing through the same stages from infancy through maturity. It is important to know these stages and to realize what responses your chin puppy is capable of at any particular time in his/her life. The speed at which puppies progress varies a little. Generally, puppies of smaller breeds tend to develop more rapidly, often reaching maturity before one year old. The following stages are the rate at which a Chin generally progresses.
Newborn Period: 0 to 2 Weeks
During this short phase, the puppy mostly sleeps and suckles. He can crawl, or what is more like swimming or dragging himself around, and will try to find the warmth of littermates or its mother if is feels cold. Eyes open at around 14 days but vision is poor for the first few weeks.
Transitional Period: 2 to 3 Weeks
The teeth will begin to appear at around this time and the puppies become more aggressive. The puppy learns to walk and lap liquids. Weaning begins at around two and one half weeks. The ears open toward the end of the third week and the sense of smell begins to operate.
Socialization Period: 3 to 12 weeks
First Stage: weeks 3 to 5 At 3 to 4 weeks, the puppy’s sight, hearing and sense of smell are becoming more efficient. She begins to eat solid food, bark, wag her tail and play bite’s littermates. At 4 to 5 weeks, he paws, bares teeth, growls, chases and plays prey-killing (head-shaking) games. He begins to carry objects in his mouth. The puppy begins to learn to inhibit his bite during play with littermates.
Second Stage: weeks 5 to 8 Facial and ear expressiveness are seen. The puppy acquires full use of her eyes and ears and becomes more coordinated. Participation in group activities with others in the litter is seen. At the end of this stage, puppies begin to be more cautious, but they are still curious and will investigate anything.
Third Stage: weeks 8 to 12 Appropriate behaviors begin to be exhibited at appropriate times. The puppy has a very strong desire to please. The hierarchy among littermates begins to be sorted out.
Juvenile Period: 3 to 6 Months
The puppy is still dependant on you, in the early stages of this period, puppies are usually eager to please and will do whatever they believe their owners want them to do. During this period they will continue to learn about the hierarchy within the family and attempt to find their own position within the hierarchy. The willingness to please of this stage should be used to the full, as training will be more difficult later as the puppy becomes more independent. Games can become more advanced and can be used as a reward for training. Environmental awareness is increasing. They begin to explore farther afield but always stay within range of the security of their owner.
